THE OPENING FILM
This year’s opening film was by Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda, who took home the Golden Palm at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival for his film Shoplifters.
During the event he presented his first film shot outside his home country: La Vérité (The Truth). Shot in Paris in 2018, it is an intimate family story and stars Catherine Deneuve, Juliette Binoche and Ethan Hawke. Hirokazu Kore-eda’s films are praised for using simple means to tell intense stories about ordinary people in particularly challenging situations.

FEATHERS BY VALENTINO
It’s safe to say that the Somali-American icon Iman shut down the festival in custom couture.
Arriving to the ceremony by water taxi, the model sported a look from Pierpaolo Piccioli’s latest Valentino Haute Couture collection: a billowing, dramatic violet gown covered from head to toe with ruched taffeta.
With such an opulent piece (and, of course, Iman’s glowing natural beauty) it didn’t take much in the way of accessories to bring the look to life: just a smoky eye, a lick of purple lipstick, and a single diamond earring to add a more sultry touch.
It seems that even if the night might have been largely in celebration of her humanitarian work, Iman was also taking the opportunity to once again serve us an iconic fashion moment—not that we needed reminding.
