TikTok was launched in 2017 by Bytedance and is a Chinese IOS and Android app that is used to create short comedic, talent and lip-sync videos that can be uploaded onto social various media platforms and the standalone app.

Tiktok already boasts a 1.2 billion global community who have installed the app and 500 million active users: surpassing Twitter, LinkedIn, and Snapchat.

The TikTok app offers a wide range of sounds and song snippets, along with the option to add special effects and filters. There is also an option to directly add videos created on your phone onto the app. Consequently, users can produce a variety of videos ranging from challenges, dance videos, magic tricks to name a few…

A key competitor could be Musical.ly, but the main difference is that TikTok has a wider variety of video features and user-friendly tools, they don’t just offer lip-syncing, to different songs.

Recently, TikTok added the reactions feature which allows users to record their reactions to videos and share on social platforms. TikTok has also added a digital well-being feature that alerts users when they spend over two hours on the app to help confront issues concerning screen time.

Security issues have brought forward by the US government against TikTok which alleged that the app violated the federal children’s online privacy protection act, in which websites and online services require children to obtain parental consent before collecting any personal information from any children under the age of 13.

TikTok is aware of the concerns are addressing the issue, also pointing out that there is a privacy option on the app which will allows anyone, especially the younger generation, to tailor their audience and control who they allow to see their content.

There is no doubt that TikTok is a growing social platform,  it’s a great way for users to create unique and engaging content in a new format, however with security issues amongst the key concerns for the app, it will be interesting to see how TikTok will compete against other social media giants in 2020, such as Instagram.
