JADE PEARL

Talent to watch

Want to build your portfolio outside of the modelling industry? TVBabe Jade Pearl is a modern artist from London who mainly focuses on Fashion, illustration and abstract Art.

Pearl’s main driving force is having a sustainably driven ethos in the forefront. She likes to utilise, reuse and recycle waste whilst turning it into art and fashion, she does this by changing the perception of ‘Waste Materials’. Pearl’s graduate collection ‘FORESEA’ was the starting point to her sustainable journey as a designer, where she used seaweed yarns to create a collection of plastic waste within the ocean. This then escalated into a recent project called ‘FORESEA—Worn not Wasted’ where she up-cycled denim and other discarded materials to create a mini collection, whilst still including her illustrations within the fashion garments.

She also recently collaborated with Superdry in 2018 for their ‘Back to School’ range, featuring the artist herself. Continue reading to discover how she has used her skills in collaboration with her modelling career to build her voice within the industry.

TVASKS: WHEN AND WHERE DID YOU FIRST GET SCOUTED?

JADE:

I was first scouted by Boohoo at Birmingham Clothes Show when I was around 17 and did my first ever shoot with them and graced the cover of their magazine along with a double page spread and a lot ecom work with them. (I was also told I was the first black model they shot with for a campaign, this is something I am seriously proud off) However, I didn’t actually get scouted for the agencies I am currently with, that took hard work, self-motivation and consistency.

💥 SUPERDRY X JADEPEARL 💥 Day 2 ‘Back to School’ brings me back to art and music, which to enabled myself to be creative, free, sing, design and be myself. Here I have symbolised my creativity in a simplistic way in a sort of sketch/ scribble ‘like school kids do’ I like the simplicity of things at time! Don’t get me wrong I LOVE A BIT OF COLOUR, 🎨 but sometimes just one tone and not thinking about things too much just says a lot! Thanks again to @superdry for this collaboration with you guys! Means so much to me as an artist 💎 CHECK OUT THE BACK TO SCHOOL RANGE: LINK IN MY BIO ✨ #art #artist #illustration #superdry #jadepearl

TVASKS: HOW DID YOU FIRST GET INTO THE ART WORLD AND WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO CREATE YOUR OWN WEBSITE?

My main interest in art, fashion and illustration would be when I went to school and was thrown into art class, I just fell in love and my creativity thrived from there! Art, fashion and creativity have always been a part of my childhood, my mum used to make me dresses and costumes and she used to draw and dance too. I was always surrounded by creativity and some sort of art form, I was always involved in the arts whether it was performing arts, dancing, fashion, textiles or art.

I started dancing from a young age and have always been super creative and colourful. Always drawing, painting, making jewellery from nature, I love to just constantly exploring my creativity!

I always remember wearing bright-colours as a child it was a way of expressing my self and now that colour has converted mostly into my art l, whilst I do still wear bright colours.

My website was made due to being at university and having to showcase my art in a more professional manner, now I use it as a business tool as well as my Instagram page @pearlart____.

TVASKS: TALK US THROUGH YOUR ART COLLABORATION WITH SUPERDRY…

JADE:

It was really shocking but so exciting when Superdry themselves messaged me on Instagram and wanted to collaborate with me as a model and a designer. It started off more as influencer collaboration and then when I had got to know the team bit better and had various meetings with them we discussed my art and design and they LOVED it, so the design collaborations started from there.

The Superdry #backtoschool collaboration was the first exposure of me as an artist/designer and a model. It was incredible and I am so grateful to be able to have that opportunity to collaborate with such a big brand and showcase my skills further. I Can’t wait for the next one, and who knows which exciting brands I will be able to work with as a result of this experience in the future!

TVASKS: WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE MODELLING EXPERIENCE SO FAR?

JADE:

My favourite experience in modelling so far would be right now as I am typing this, I am getting ready to fly out tomorrow to Cape Town and I love that my work allows me to travel around the world! I have always wanted to travel with my job and I am so blessed and great fun to finally be doing what I have always dreamt of, keep an eye out on my Instagram as I will definitely be uploading my journey online whilst I am here.

TVASKS: HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR A PHOTOSHOOT?

JADE:

Before a photo shoot, I would always try to make sure don’t eat any greasy, stodgy or starchy foods, to give my body and skin and cleanse and to help me with minimising bloating. I do lead a healthy lifestyle anyway so nothing really drastically changes before a shoot. I try to drink green juices, a lot of water and smoothies the day before a shoot!

My beauty regime always stays the same, I like to use vegan natural beauty products. Sometimes I even make my own face scrubs with lemon sugar and avocado oil and moisturise with coconut oil once cleansed. About 5 days before a shoot (If I have that much time in advance to prepare, as jobs are usually booked so last minute) I like to use face-masks to hydrate and keep my skin looking young, fresh and dewy!

TVASKS: DESCRIBE YOUR PERFECT MODEL-OFF-DUTY LOOK…

JADE:

My perfect off-duty model look is the total opposite of how I look on shoots and not glamorous at all! I do love wearing bright colours though! So my look will usually consist of no makeup, hair up in a bun, comfy trousers or trackies, a cute vest and an oversized jumper (or coat depending on the weather) I am also always seen wearing my platform trainers and my coca-cola retro bag!

OUTSIDE OF MODELLING AND ART DO YOU HAVE ANY OTHER HOBBIES?

JADE:

Besides modelling and Art, I am a sustainable designer and have a behind the scenes brand FORESEA which was originally a university project. I went to Las Vegas to showcase my collection which was amazing, but sadly due to lack of funds I have had to put the brand on the back burner, but it’s not forgotten, I am always working on little bits. Never the less my main creative focus right now is my artwork, selling my art and illustrations and customised hand painted garments. It is such an amazing way to understand who you are both as an individual and as an artist.

I really hope to collaborate with more brands and get my message and work seen in the upcoming months. I am also occasionally a vocal coach and I love working out and hitting the gym! My favourite is boxing and HIIT classes.

TVASKS: HOW DID YOU GET INTO DESIGN?

JADE:

So my design history first began when I officially started with the sustainable brand FORESEA. This was a university project which I developed to focus on a sustainably driven collection, we had full reign on what we could do with the assignment so it was great to have such freedom and develop my passion.

The idea behind FORESEA evolved from the concept of plastic waste in the ocean. I went to my local beach and within minutes I was picking up waste, debris, plastic, all sorts, and that’s when it clicked that this is a massive issue and I must show awareness.

I am not one to be an obvious designer when it comes to my concepts, I really like the subtleties of things especially when it comes to political issues (I don’t know why it’s just the way I design) I like to blend it in with something that seems familiar to the audience, but with a slight twist to draw them in and make them ask questions. Then they seem surprised about the process and what it’s made from and that it’s a sustainably driven collection. There is no point pushing sustainability in people’s faces, it will only drive them away. So instead I wanted to show people how sustainable vegan fashion doesn’t have to be granola and boring, it can be high end, fashionable and unique!

Middle of the week guys #happyhumpday 🐪 Even though I am feeling poorly, I don’t feel half as bad as I used too since eating a more wholesome mostly raw vegan diet! Getting in all those healthy nutrients and minerals has done wonders for my body! Eating loads of fresh fruits and veggies really helped so much more rather than the tonnes of biscuits and bread I used to eat! Look after your body, be kind to it and it will be kind back ❤️ Here’s a shot of me on the rooftop feeling fresh and fine! Love a good black and white pic! #vegan #rawvegan #nutrition #blackandwhite #wholesome #clean #fresh #model #photography #style #fashion #artist #designer #natropathicmedicine #jadepearl

TVASKS: WHAT WOULD BE ONE DREAM COLLABORATION YOU WISH TO ACHIEVE WITH YOUR ART?

JADE:

One dream collaboration would be to showcase how versatile I am as an artist. I would love to be able to collaborate with top sports brands such as Nike or Adidas with their accessories/ shoes and high sustainable concepts and installations etc and then be able to collaborate with a high end fashion brands and work on the garments/ prints, concepts and fashion shows with brands such as Vivienne Westwood and/ or Off White.

TVASKS: WHAT DO YOU THINK IS ONE MISCONCEPTION ABOUT THE FASHION INDUSTRY?

JADE:

Some people may argue differently but I feel on a general whole there is a misconception where fashion/ high fashion is just not sustainable or ethical due to fast pace fashion turnover and the expiration of fur.

Whilst some of this is true, some of the fashion industry is staying stagnant, for the most part, I believe it is moving forward and moving towards to a more sustainable and ethical alignment. Take Christopher Raeburn for example, he is an inspiration for recycling materials into fashion garments. Nowadays in some ways, it is seen to be unfashionable if pieces are not ethically sourced/ made or have some sort of a sustainable background or concept

This is why I wanted to bring FORESEA into the fashion industry to show how sustainably driven fashion can be at the forefront. There is also a misconception that sustainable fashion is bare, boring and granola, but I believe it comes down to the concept, the design, the art,  the craft, your own personal ethics and your style, then it is the confidence you add to it, confidence is key with fashion.
